Come and join the volunteers at Shoreham Fort, a hidden gem in Adur's Crown, with more history than you can shake a stick at... Let us share why we are more than just bricks and mortar.

The Butcher, the Baker, the Candlestick Maker they say...

How about the Soldier, the Actor and the Spy?

Not only can we share with you Shoreham Fort's amazing history, we can give a glimpse into the lives of those people living and breathing 'all things fort' - from the Victorians to Now.

A local volunteer will guide you around Shoreham Fort, bringing it's past to life. Our unique and diverse history includes a link to a several famous British actors, an incredible soldier at Balaclava and even a French spy.

Being a prototype to the Palmerston Forts you will hear about the design flaws in Littlehampton Fort, which were corrected here with us at Shoreham. You will be able to visit the last useable First World War Nissen Hut in the country and reflect in our War Memorial; built in remembrance of all the soldiers who were trained in Shoreham and its surrounds, many who didn't return.

Accessibility details

Shoreham Fort is privately owned and the landowners have fenced the site. There are large steps up to the gun emplacements and two small flights of steps down into the South Caponier. Numbers are restricted to this part of the tour so groups will be split. As the site is a Scheduled Monument, we must ask that children are supervised at all times. Climbing on areas of the fort, other than the steps, is not permitted. Uncovered foundations create a small area of uneven ground, but these are very obvious.

Additional information

Food for Fort is our little tea hut (White Beach Hut) which serves hot and cold drinks, snacks, and ice creams (weather permitting) for just £1.00. All proceeds from Food for Fort are invested back into the charity for the maintenance and conservation of the site, as well as enhancing our outreach and education programme.
