Uncover the hidden story of Slade Camp—Oxford’s ‘Angkor Wat’ (!) —with guided walking tours through the woods, a short film, exhibition, and tea & cake

Slade Camp was once a thriving community in the foothills of Shotover Hill, Headington, until its closure in 1971, when it was left to return to nature. Today, hidden in the woods, visitors can discover the moss-covered foundations of former homes and hedges that have grown wild. Explore at your own pace or join a guided tour running between 11.30 and 15.00 on Sunday 13 September.

Slade Camp was built as a military camp for the Second World War, and in the housing shortage that followed a temporary solution turned into a close-knit and resourceful community that became known as Slade Park. With the help of a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, Shotover Preservation Society, Oxford Preservation Trust, and local volunteers have been working with over 100 former residents to rekindle their strong sense of belonging through oral histories, photographs, a film and a book.

You can experience Slade Camp through;
• Guided tours with local historians every half hour (first-come, first-served basis)
• A short film which will be shown in a marquee on the hour
• Hundreds of photographs shared by former residents
• Artifacts that have been unearthed during excavations
• Slade Camp apple juice, made from apple trees that stood then
• Homemade cake and tea in a tranquil woodland setting

This is the last formal year of the Slade Camp project, and we're expecting many former residents to be there, so you’ll be able to hear their stories first hand. Parking and access details below.
