Join us for a guided walk around South Moor Heritage Trail of approximately 3.5 miles starting and finishing at South Moor Memorial Park. In the 1920's South Moor was a bustling, expanding village in the expanding town of Stanley. Mines and associated housing and social provisions had been increasing since the mid nineteenth century with South Moor Memorial Park opening in July 1920 as the final piece in the jigsaw. Miners lived in colliery owned terraced housing and visited the local church. Mine safety and health were becoming more important with the building of the Miners Rescue Station and miners welfare hospital in the 1920's. South Moor Golf Club was founded by miners in the same decade and has holes designed by Sir Alister MacKenzie the world's most famous course designer.

Spend your Sunday morning with our knowledgeable group leaders finding out more above the history of the village. Using old railway lines, public footpaths and pavement to access 8 prominent locations the walk visits local landmarks from the height of the North East coal industry.

The Heritage Trail was created as part of a Durham County Council project and the walk is hosted by Wear Rivers Trust.
