St Hilda's Church (1905) was built to serve the emerging population of West Jesmond. It retains many furnishings from the Arts & Crafts period, with an exhibition of vestments, frontals, hanging pyx and a triptych by Fra Newbery

By 1900 the need for another church and Sunday School to serve the new housing area of West Jesmond was clearly evident. A short walk from West Jesmond station, the church was built to designs by Newcastle architects Hicks & Charlwood. The Grade 2 listed building features a spacious nave with a wooden barrel roof and rose window, both north and south aisles, a lady chapel and high altar, plus a fine pipe organ by the Newcastle firm of Blackett & Howden.
Items on show here reflect the Arts & Crafts movement and the church's Anglo-Catholic heritage. Of particular note is the hanging pix (thought to be the only example in Newcastle Diocese) and the magnificent triptych painted by well-known artist Francis (Fra) Newbery of the Glasgow School of Art. Examples of embroidery and needlework include a depiction of St Hilda that is believed to have been made locally, possibly in Durham. Vestments and altar frontals on display portray the seasons of the church calendar.
Guided tours start outside the church (weather permitting) and focus on both the architecture and contents of this beautiful building.
Open access at other times as shown. Sunday Parish Eucharist takes place at 11.00 am with refreshments afterwards - all welcome.
