St Lawrence church is one of the two remaining medieval churches in the Parish of Stantonbury & Willen. The building is 800+ years old, but has been added to over the centuries. Join us to see this busy historic church and take a tour too!

St Lawrence church has been a feature of Bradwell Village for over 800 years; it sits next to what remains of another ancient monument: the 12th century Motte and Bailey ‘castle’. Also nearby are the remains of Bradwell Priory with its surviving chapel. In spite of the close proximity the church has never been linked to Bradwell Priory, the advowson was instead given to Tickford Priory in Newport Pagnell. St Lawrence has had 60 vicars since ‘Henricus’ was installed in 1223 and over the years the building has undergone many changes. The Reformation and the dissolution of the monasteries made more money and materials available for further development of the building. The north porch was added using stone and timber reclaimed from Bradwell priory and the tower was enlarged to house redundant bells from Snellshall priory church. The oldest two of these; from 1310, are still being rung for Sunday services. A later alteration to the tower gave it the distinctive ‘saddle back’ roof that is an unusual feature for an English church. An extension was added at the end of the last century to make the church more suitable for the growing population of the new City of Milton Keynes.
