Opened in 1844, St Mary's church is a beacon of hope in Knowsley Village. Designed by Edmund Sharpe, Edward Paley, and Austin and Paley. This Victorian church in Gothic revival style has beautiful mosaics, and a fascinating history.

This Grade 2 listed church was bit in 1843-44 to a design by Edward Sharpe for the 13th Earl of Derby at a cost of £20000.


1844 Consecrated on 6 June 1844 by Rt Revd John Bird Sumner, Bishop of Chester.
1860 Transepts designed by Edward Paley added
1871-72 Memorial Chapel to the 14th Earl of Derby added, designed by Paley and Austin, at a total cost of £3000. This included the cost of a monument with figure by Matthew Noble.
1892-93. New vestry, and new east window added, designed by Paley and Austin
1913. Organ installed in the Derby Chapel
1981-82. Church reordered, introducing a nave altar, meeting and service facilities
