St Mary & St Rhadegunde, Whitwell, is a medieval parish church with an unusual origin as two manorial chapels built side by side. The earlier chapel of St Rhadegunde dates from the 12th century, while the smaller chapel of St Mary was added to the south around 1200. Over time the two chapels were brought together to form one church: the chancel and south aisle developed in the 13th century, and in the late 15th or early 16th century the south aisle was widened, the south chapel, porch and west tower were added, and the former dividing wall was removed. The result is a distinctive layered building that preserves Norman, medieval and later features within a single parish church.

17th-century cherry wood pulpit, dated 1623, has carved panels and arabesque decoration and is regarded as one of the finest examples on the Isle of Wight. In the south chapel, the 17th-century wooden altar table, with its characteristic bulbous legs, provides a further link with the church’s post-Reformation furnishings. The church also has stained glass windows, including glass in the east end of the church, and a group of stained glass windows recorded in local photographic archives. Its pipe organ dates from 1860 and was made by Bevington; it was restored and extended in 1899.
