St Michael and All Angels, Mount Dinham: The Architecture of Inspiration
St Michael and All Angels Church, Dinham Road, Exeter, Devon, EX4 4EB
St Michael & All Angels is one of the most spectacular monuments of the Anglican Revival in Devon, designed by Major Rohde Hawkins in the early French style and built in 1868, in memory of the philanthropist John Dinham. Come and discover the stunning architecture and the extraordinary story of St. Michael's through talks and tours of the church and Mount Dinham itself, with Dr Richard W Parker.
Find out what 28,000 people fought for and won through a petition in 2024 to secure the future of this unique place, on a windy outcrop in central Exeter: St. Michael's is cherished by local residents, home to an Anglo Catholic community and a nesting pair of Peregrine falcons on arguably the tallest church spire west of Salisbury. The size and proportions of St Michael's provides one of the finest acoustics in Devon, which regularly hosts both music events and traditional services with a Cathedral-style choral repertoire.
The Heritage Open Days will share all of this and more through an introduction to the architecture of St Michael's Mount Dinham and how its form inspires what takes places within its walls and beyond. Visit us to explore our heritage exhibition, musical recitals, guided tours and talks on its architecture and the peregrines.
The Refectory will be open across the weekend with delicious home made refreshments for visitors. Free parking is available and we look forward to welcoming you!
