900 years ago, Berwick was at the heart of a revolution: the advent of coinage in Medieval Scotland. Have a go at striking your own medieval Northumbrian coin with Bjarni Thorvaldrson, the Science Viking.

Also, learn all about the history of this everyday item we take for granted in the context of Berwick’s Royal Mint.

The Living Barracks Project is a partnership between English Heritage, The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Northumberland County Council and BBHT. It is breathing new life into Berwick’s historic Barracks, restoring their place at the heart of the town’s cultural and community life. Ahead of the site’s full reopening in 2028, an inspiring programme of art, heritage and community projects is already unfolding - created with and for the people of Berwick, thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the UK Government’s Cultural Development Fund. Together, we’re rediscovering what the Barracks have been, will be and could become.
