The Ancient Teversal Village walk
St. Katherine's Church, Buttery Lane, Teversal Village, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, NG17 3JN
Betjeman once described Teversal Village as a 'rural oasis' in the former 'coal producing area on the Notts - Derby border'. As part of our weekend celebrating the rich history of the area, there will be guided walks around the local area, to explore its rich heritage.
This walk takes in many points of interest, including the outskirts of the Manor, where Virginia Woolf spent time in August 1904. Aubrey Herbert, the son of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find Tuthankahmun's tomb, also spent time here. His daughter Laura, married Evelyn Waugh...tenuous but also literary connections, which we talk about on the walk. It is thought that the Manor is the inspiration for Lawrence's Wragby Hall and probably his inspiration for making Sir Clifford Chatterley a wheelchair user. The Manor was used for the rehabilitation of soldiers after the First World War and the garden terrace was adapted for wheelchair users. Teversal village is now a conservation area.
The event is free, but donations towards the upkeep of the church will be gratefully received.
