The Hive
43-47 Vittoria Street, Birmingham, West Midlands, B1 3ND
Echoes of Chandigarh is a free exhibition in the Hive's gallery from the 4th to the 26th of September: Midlands based artist Suminder Virk captures the essence of the brutalist architecture in her hometown Chandigarh. The city’s Capitol Complex was designed by Le Corbusier, influencing the development of modernism in the 20th century.
Some of the paintings featured are made with Suminder’s own distinctive technique that emulates the traditional Henna tattooing methods, using fine lines of oil paint to evoke architectural textures and form. Everyday buildings in Chandigarh have also inspired the work and the exhibition includes her own photos of them.
In the Hive's heritage lounge, another free exhibition showcases the incredible camera collection of historian James Leighton. Made in the Jewellery Quarter, they represent 100 years of camera manufacture. This exhibition opens on the 11th of September and closes on the 26th of September.
The Hive's opening times are: Tue-Fri 10.00-15.30 (last admission for the gallery 15.00; admission to the Heritage Lounge and Cafe from 07.30-15.30)
