Tours of Hawkshead Grammar School's historic library
Hawkshead Grammar School Museum, Main Street, Hawkshead, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA220NT
The school's historic library was founded in 1675 by ex-pupil Daniel Rawlinson, who also rebuilt the school building into what stands today. Rawlinson crowdfunded the library books from family, friends and colleagues in London, creating a unique collection beyond a traditional grammar school curriculum. Along with religious scripture, Latin and Greek mythology, books on world history, naval maps, and astronomy expanded the teaching here and inspired the schoolboys for centuries. 100 years after the founding, William Wordsworth found solace in the school library, even donating to it himself.
What is left is a record of not only the book genres that have been popular since the 16th century but also caricatures, doodles, and notes by the schoolboys. The historic library gives us an insight into the boys' behaviour and personalities.
We are delighted to share our "extraordinary" library collection with you, with FREE entry and a library talk alongside our regular museum experience, which includes our 2025 exhibition on Rawlinson and the Library's creation.
Since 2020, we have been undertaking a large cataloging and conservation project with the library books, thanks to our team of volunteers and staff. You will be able to see our team at work, recording and repairing their way through the (over) 1600 books in the collection
Please note that due to availability, this Heritage Open Day offer will take place over the two weekends (13-14th and 20-21st September).
