Vanny Radio – Community Broadcasters

Vanny Radio will host a family-friendly programme celebrating the people, cultures and experiences that have shaped Coventry. Visitors will be welcomed by presenters and volunteers before taking part in behind-the-scenes tours of the radio studio and learning how programmes are researched, recorded and broadcast.

Recorded testimonies and short talks will highlight migration, settlement, music, faith, work, sport and neighbourhood life. Historic photographs, posters, radio equipment and selected recordings will illustrate changes in communication and community life over time. Guests will be invited to contribute a short memory or message for a community heritage recording, with their consent, creating new material for future educational use.

There will be live demonstrations of presenting, interviewing and audio production, with opportunities for children and young people to try a microphone, develop questions and record a short introduction. Local elders, residents, artists and community representatives will be encouraged to exchange experiences across generations.

The event is suitable for families, young people, older residents and first-time visitors. People may drop in and participate at their own pace, with guidance available from staff and volunteers. Admission and every activity are free, and no previous knowledge is required. The event will make heritage welcoming and relevant while recognising voices that are often absent from formal historical records.

Directions:

Meeting point: The main reception/entrance, where Vanny Radio staff and volunteers will welcome visitors. Look for the Broad Street Centre on Broad Street, close to Foleshill Library. The nearest bus stop is “Broad Street” on Foleshill Road, served by routes 20, 20A and 20E. On arrival, follow the Vanny Radio signs or ask at reception. There is no on-site visitor parking, so public transport is recommended.

Accessibility details

All public activities will take place on the ground floor, so visitors will not need to use stairs. General on-site parking is unavailable. Parking for Blue Badge holders may be arranged in advance. Visitors with mobility, sensory, communication or other access requirements should contact Vanny Radio beforehand so appropriate assistance can be arranged.

This is a family-friendly event. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Visitors should report to reception and sign in on arrival. Photography, audio and video recording may take place; consent will be requested before anyone is interviewed or recorded. Please inform staff if you do not wish to appear in photographs or recordings.
