Warneford 200: Warneford Walk and Therapy Garden
Warneford Hospital, Warneford Lane, Headington, Oxford, Oxfordshire, OX3 7JX
Warneford 200 commemorates 200 years of the Warneford hospital in Oxfordshire, the UK’s oldest, still operating mental health hospital in the country. As part of Warneford 200, this self-guided experience invites visitors to explore the historic Warneford Hospital grounds, including the Therapy Garden, and discover how mental health care has evolved over the past two centuries.
The Warneford Walk features a series of stops across the site, each sharing stories from the hospital’s past and present. Visitors can access an audio tour via their phone, with recordings brought to life by staff voices, offering insight into the people, practices and environments that have shaped the Warneford.
The Therapy Garden provides a reflective space within the grounds, highlighting the ongoing importance of wellbeing, recovery and environment in mental health care.
Together, the walk and garden offer a unique opportunity to engage with the history and lived experience of mental health in a peaceful outdoor setting.
