Wheatfen Nature Reserve
Wheatfen, The Covey, Surlingham, Norwich, Norfolk, NR14 7AL
Three self-guided tours around Wheatfen nature reserve. Wheatfen was home to Ted Ellis, his wife Phyllis and their children from 1946 until his death in 1986. His widow Phyllis then set up the Ted Ellis Trust in order to conserve the magical wetland for the future. Spanning 52 hectares, Wheatfen consists of large swathes of open fen, reed beds, sallow carr and two small broads called Wheatfen and Deep Waters, interspersed with a network of pathways that are open to the public to explore. It is managed by the Ted Ellis Trust who employ a reserve warden supported by a host of dedicated volunteers to maintain the site. Wheatfen remains one of the most continuously studied areas of wetland in the UK.

Wheatfen is a Nature Reserve and although some paths and boardwalks through the fen are fully accessible others are narrow and uneven and therefore unsuitable for wheelchairs. The fen paths can be wet when tides are high, even in summer! Please ensure that you wear appropriate footwear and check the website for closures. No dogs are allowed on the reserve to avoid disturbance to wildlife.
Please note there is limited space in the car park. You may also park on the side of The Covey but allow access for farm vehicles to pass at all times. Wheatfen is a tidal wetland reserve so please check the reserve website for tide times and advice regarding reserve closures. The reserve may also be closed during high winds due to the risk of sudden tree falls.
