Archaeology In The Park
GWR Park, Faringdon Road, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN1 5ED
Join the professional archaeologists from the Cultural Heritage Institute, RAU Swindon and uncover the WWII secrets of the GWR Park. Archaeological excavation. All welcome. No experience is necessary. Full training is given.
Ever wondered how archaeologists decide where to put their trenches? Ever wondered how they reconstruct past civilisations from a handful of broken pottery? Ever wondered whether YOU would make a good archaeologist? Well now's your chance to find out. Join us between the 8th and 10th of September for our public archaeology excavation in GWR Park in the Railway Village, Swindon.
This year we will be excavating the World War II shelters and practice trenches near the War Memorial. Learn how the New Swindon Rifle Corps prepared to fight on the front lines and kept themselves safe from enemy bombardment. Uncover artefacts that connect us to local people in the past and discover how to research their untold stories.
No experience is necessary. All ages are welcome (under 16s will need to bring a responsible adult). Spend as much or little time on site as you like. Full training and guidance are given. From excavation, photography and recording, to online research and artefact processing in the lab, there's a role for everyone in archaeology, so no need to get your hands dirty... unless you want to!
Tea, coffee and fun provided.
Many thanks to South Swindon Parish Council.
