Step into the world of one of Britain’s greatest artists at Gainsborough’s House this Heritage Open Days 2025. Enjoy free entry to the historic house and garden, where you can explore the very rooms where Thomas Gainsborough lived and worked. Discover the story of his life and art in beautifully restored 18th-century surroundings, and wander through the historic garden. Nestled among the greenery, you can also admire a striking series of sculptures by renowned artist Helaine Blumenfeld OBE, adding a contemporary touch to this historic setting.

The Gainsborough Gallery is a highlight not to be missed, displaying an outstanding collection of his masterpieces that bring his story to life. Alongside Gainsborough’s works, the house also features pieces by acclaimed contemporary artist Katherine Jones RA, offering a fresh perspective in dialogue with Gainsborough’s legacy.

Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a range of free activities for all ages, family-friendly creative activities, an art trail and demonstration of the camera Obscura, along with opportunities to learn more about Gainsborough’s life and influence.

For those wishing to extend their visit, the special temporary exhibition from Kenwood House will also be open on the day for the exclusive price of just £7. This is a rare opportunity to see remarkable works on loan from one of London’s most important historic collections.

Directions:
Gainsborough’s House is situated in the centre of Sudbury, Suffolk on Gainsborough Street, at the bottom of Market Hill. The cafe and shop are on Weavers Lane which are adjacent to the front of the House. The entrance can be found in our new gallery space which is also situated on Weavers Lane just past our Print Workshop. By Train: Sudbury, Suffolk railway station is a connecting line from Marks Tey on the Liverpool St to Norwich line. The station is half a mile from Gainsborough’s House. A 10 minute walk along Station Road, Friars Street and into Gainsborough Street will bring you to the House. By Car: There are three public car parks a short walk away. North Street has 199 spaces and, directed from the A131 one way system, has free Pay & Display parking for 3 hours. For all day parking, both the Kingfisher Leisure Centre and Sudbury Railway Station have plenty of Pay & Display parking

Accessibility details

Gainsborough’s House is mostly accessible by wheelchair. Unfortunately, larger mobility scooters are not suited to our museum layout. You may borrow our manual wheelchair while visiting and this is located at the reception desk. If you would like access to this during your visit, please call in advance if possible. Once you are in the gardens, there is ramp access to The Watering Place Café and the main House.
