Burton Street Foundation Tour
Burton Building, 57 Burton Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S6 2HH
The Burton Street Foundation is a thriving centre providing creative disability services for people around Sheffield. It was built as Langsett Road School in 1879, surrounded by back-to-back housing and Sheffield's steel industry, giving an education to many of Hillsborough's poorest children.
A century later, the old terraced houses were demolished and the school closed in 1976. The old school buildings also faced the wrecking ball until they were rescued by the local community and even gained fame as a filming location in the Full Monty before being modernised and becoming the home for the Burton Street Foundation, which also hosts many other businesses in spaces around the site, including a boxing gym and disability arts organisation Under the Stars.
Our Victorian buildings are a source of inspiration and joy, as well as the responsibility to maintain them under our guardianship. In the summer, swifts nest in the eaves and swoop around the old school playground. There are many architectural details, showing pride and craftsmanship, from the Moorish details of some windows to the intricate carving of the fireplaces. You'll discover many of these details on our tour, as well as some artworks that our clients have added themselves!
There will also be a display of photographs and documents from the Burton Street archive and the Hillsborough and Owlerton History Group.
Please arrive at our main cafe at 1pm to start the tour.
This tour is part of Heritage Open Days 2025.
