Cliveden National Trust

Cliveden Estate, Cliveden Road, Cliveden, Buckinghamshire, SL1 8NS

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Set high above the Thames with far-reaching views, Cliveden’s vibrant gardens capture the grandeur of a bygone age. The formal gardens give way to secluded glades, tree-lined avenues and picturesque riverside with miles of woodland walks to discover.

Follow in the footsteps of dukes, earls and royalty as you explore a series of gardens, each with their own special charm. From the fragrant Rose Garden, with winding paths through layers of colourful blooms, to the vast Parterre with its geometric beds and far-reaching views, there is something for everyone at Cliveden. For the family audience there is the Storybook Play Den, the maze or if you fancy a trip on the water you can find Boating at Cliveden beside the Boathouse on the river. Cliveden's current maze is based on one that was built for the 1st Viscount Astor in 1894 and has over 500 metres of paths winding amongst two-metre high hedges.

Cliveden House situated in the middle of the estate operates as a luxury hotel and generally not open to National Trust guests. Short tours will be available Monday 15 September - Friday 19 September for Heritage Open Days Week (subject to Volunteer availability). Head to the western side of the Parterre for a surprise; the unassuming domed building overlooking the river houses a wonderfully ornate chapel, also known as the Octagon Temple.

A variety of different tours will be running throughout the week. House Tour, Sculpture Tour and Garden Tour tickets are available from the Information Centre on a first come first served basis, or look out for the outdoor pop-up history talks provided by our dedicated volunteers.
