North Shields began as a collection of 6 fisherman’s huts (or shiels) on the narrow strip of land next to the River Tyne
at the mouth of the Pow Burn. This area became known as Low Town. The C13 Prior ( Germanus) at Tynemouth, provided boats for the fisherman to catch fish for the priory. Over time the number of huts grew and so did the trade. They began to export coal and leather and import wool and wine (the prior liked wine). On this walk you will hear how North Shields developed from this small fishing village to this bustling town we know today.
