Guided Tour of Halesworth Cemetery
Halesworth Cemetery, Holton Road, Halesworth, Suffolk, IP19 8HD
Halesworth Cemetery was opened in 1855 following the closure of the main town graveyard at St Mary’s church. Since its opening, the cemetery has become the last resting place of over 3000 Halesworth citizens and continues to provide an essential service for the town and district. The tour will explain the history of the cemetery, explain why it is located where it is and point out the location of some of the notable burials. There will also be an opportunity to see inside one of the restored cemetery chapels.
The tour on Thursday 17th September welcomes all comers and there is no pre-booking required. The tour will walk from the Holton Road entrance to the top of the cemetery, roughly 400 metres or so, along well maintained paths. Dogs are welcome. The cemetery is open for the whole of Heritage Open Day week and visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour if they cannot make the Thursday date. Thanks to East Suffolk Services and Co-op Funeralcare for their assistance in providing access to the cemetery facilities.
