Lister Lane Cemetery Open Day
Lister Lane, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX1 5JL
Lister Lane Cemetery opened as the Halifax General Cemetery in 1841. It became the final resting place of nearly 20,000 individuals until its closure in the 1960s. The cemetery is now lovingly cared for by the Friends.
Its memorials provide an index of many who shaped the development of Halifax. From the Crossley family, who built the carpet manufacturing business at Dean Clough Mills through to 19th century workers in hundreds of trades. There are Waterloo veterans, residents of the USA, Canada, New Zealand etc., Chartists, chapel ministers and murder victims. We will be delighted to introduce you to 'our residents’ and explain why Halifax needed its first independent cemetery, which took years to prepare and landscape.
We look forward to welcoming you on one of our guided tours.
