St Peter's Methodist Church, Canterbury
St. Peter's Methodist Church, St Peter's Street, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2BE
Before the present church was erected, Canterbury Methodists worshipped in a twelve-sided building in King Street. This was nick-named the ‘Pepper Box’ or ‘Roundhouse’ chapel because of its shape. Plans of it can be seen in the modern multi-sided church hall, which reflects its design.
A church is far more than its buildings. Display boards created by members of St Peter’s Junior Church give their answers to the question ‘What is a Church?’ - a building, people, a family, a community. St Peter’s is an inclusive church and welcomes all people, regardless of their gender, gender identity, sexuality, ethnic origin, disability, mental or physical health, or social background. An Eritrean congregation regularly hold services in the church and a Ukrainian choir and dance group, who practise in it, regard St Peter’s as their ‘second home’. Some of this diversity will be reflected in displays by local groups, schools, and charities which use the premises. There will be an activity table for children and refreshments will be served – as they are every Saturday by pupils from Kent College who provide a ‘Community Cafe’ in the church hall.
