The Banqueting House at Gibside

A rare chance to see inside The Banqueting House, a Gothic folly designed around 1750 by Daniel Garrett for wealthy coal mining magnate, George Bowes. Intended both to be looked at and to look out for, the folly was rescued from dereliction by the Landmark Trust and is now normally let for holidays. Experience the elegant space of the sitting room as you imagine the 18th-century ladies and gentlemen who were brought here on their tour of the estate.

The Banqueting House is set within National Trust Gibside; visitors should park in the free National Trust car park.

Admission is free and booking is preferred. Information will be provided detailing the building's history including kids activity sheets.

Accessibility details

There is no parking available at The Banqueting House and open day visitors should park in the free National Trust car park. It is then a 25 minute (1 mile) walk to the Banqueting House along a woodland track. Please wear sturdy footwear as the path climbs in places. Twenty accessible parking spaces. Accessible Tramper is available to book, call 07712 535938 in advance. National Trust access information is available on their website. Due to the nature of its location, this building may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.
