Visit the cottages and a meeting house in old Aylesbury dating back to the early 1700s. Enjoy a peaceful garden, once a Quaker burial ground, near the centre of town. Find out about Quakers and the other users of the site.
The Society of Friends (also called Quakers) was founded in the 1640s. In the late 1650s, Quakers met in Weston Turville and in Rowsham. There are records of Quaker meetings in a house in Aylesbury in 1689.
The two cottages fronting onto the road date from the end of the 17th century. In 1704 the cottages and land behind were legally transferred to Aylesbury Quakers. The cottages were leased to various people until 1985 when they were converted into one, with most of the upstairs becoming a flat for the Warden and the downstairs used for meetings, as a library and so on.
The present meeting house was built in 1726-27, so it is nearly 300 years old. Quakers have worshipped here ever since, though there was a period from 1836 to 1933 when there were not enough Quakers in Aylesbury and the meeting house was rented out to other organisations.
The interior of the meeting house reflects Quaker simplicity and equality. Benches and chairs face towards the centre. There is no font, pulpit, altar or communion table. The walls are plain, with no pictures.
In our ‘meeting for worship,’ we sit in silence, but if anyone feels they wish to speak they can do so: this is called ‘ministry’. So we have no priests or put it another way, we are all priests.
We hope to provide tea and coffee.

The Judges Lodgings was built in 1849-50 by E.B. Lamb to provide accommodation for the Assize judges on
their visits to Aylesbury. It is a spacious four-storey building connected to the court rooms in the County Hall by an overhead passage. Judges continued to stay there until the abolition of the Assize courts in 1971.
Judges who used the Lodgings in the 20th century included eminent legal names, among them Norman (later Lord) Birkett, Lord Chief Justice Parker and future Lord Chief Justices Goddard, Widgery and Lane. Perhaps the most famous assizes for which the Lodgings was used was the trial of the Great Train Robbers at Special Assizes in 1964 before Mr Justice Edmund Davies.
The last occasion on which the Lodgings was used for the intended purpose was for the final Buckinghamshire Assizes, the Autumn Assizes of 1970

Also,if you're a budding novelist or someone who has never written anything in their lives, Steve Katon will find the storyteller in you. Steve will be on hand with a series of prompts designed to polish your writing!

A rare chance to see inside the Gothic Temple, a splendid folly built in 1741 by architect James Gibbs. It was one of Lord Cobham's last additions to his famous landscape at Stowe and dedicated by him 'To the Liberties of our Ancestors.'
This Temple, built in 1741, is a high point in the famous landscape gardens at Stow, created for Lord Cobham by Charles Bridgeman and his successor, William Kent. Also in 1741, Capability Brown arrived as a gardener, to begin his own transformation of the landscape, and the Gothic Temple reflects the shift in tastes in both architecture and landscape. Inside, the rooms are all circular and the dome of the central space is bright with gilded heraldic mosaics, with a gallery running all around. Rescued by the Landmark Trust in the 1970s and now normally let for holidays, bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom are squeezed into the turrets. A rare chance too to take in The Temple's unique views of the famous landscape in which it stands.

See inside a restored and working flour mill, see wheat being ground into flour, buy a bag of flour, and enjoy the tranquil mill gardens with a cup of tea and a cake from the refreshments tent.
Pann Mill sits at the eastern end of High Wycombe and is a gateway to the Rye open space. There were once over 30, but it is now the last operating water mill on the river Wye, a tributary of the Thames. The site is one of the six mentioned in the Domesday record for Wycombe so there have been mills on the site since at least 1086, and probably much earlier. The previous Georgian mill was substantially altered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and mostly demolished in 1972. However, the remains and the site were saved and a restoration project was started which continues to this day. The current mill building was erected in 1984 to protect the running gear but it also allowed the mill to be restored and returned to operation in 2000. The mill is set in an attractive garden where there will be various stalls by local societies. Refreshments will be available.

Wolverton & Stony Stratford Tramway's century-old plans have been discovered - this is their first public viewing, accompanied by a talk.
The presenter Phil Marsh’s professional railway career spans over 50 years and this talk is drawn from his extensive railway and local archives. This talk will show century-old LNWR engineering drawings which were given to Phil last autumn by an ex Wolverton Works ‘lifer’ who made sure they were not thrown out. They will be scanned and digitally given to Living Archive MK. The talk will be illustrated with photographs taken in 1924. This was the last steam powered tram in Britain which ceased operation in the 1926 General Strike. The tram had already become uneconomical and was taken over by the LNWR and maintained at Wolverton Works. The LNWR took ownership as they wanted transport for their workforce to be able to get to and from work. This talk will draw heavily from primary source material published in 1924 in conjunction with the LNWR.

An exhibition of contemporary art and crafts by local artists, including painting, textiles, ceramics and woodturning.
Artful Connections is a group of nine local professional artists and crafts people who have formed a fellowship over more than fifteen years, nurturing each other’s creativity through informal meetups, sharing of practice, drawing/painting/making sessions, and visits to exhibitions.
We are also variously associated with The ArtistCollective@Westbury, the Visual Images Group in Bucks., the Eagle Gallery Co Operative in Bedford, The Wynd Gallery in Letchworth, and the Artists Network Bedfordshire. All of us belong to a-n The Artists’ Information Company.
An important part of our coming together centres on finding places to exhibit our work, hopefully to sell - but more importantly, to show others what we make and value, with the aim of sharing our thoughts, ideas and expressions of the world around us.
Each of us takes inspiration from our surroundings, whether that is natural forms, people, landscape or weather and transform these impressions through unique methods. Our aim is to make connections concerning issues common to everyone, such as environment, wellbeing and identity.

For one day only, we’ll be taking over The Point, collecting your memories and memorabilia as part of a much larger project on this iconic landmark. If you have any badges, flyers or anything else Point-related please bring them along, have a chat, reminisce and take a look at our Back To The City exhibition, a nostalgic look back at the nightlife of Central Milton Keynes.
Did you live your best life at Zazoos, Austens 2000, Bar Central, Café Moonshine, Directors, The Empire, the Rose & Castle, the City Duck and all those other bars, clubs and pubs that are now part of Central MK’s history? Did you party at The Point, get happy at Happy Wednesdays or put your hands in the air at the mighty Ultra Vegas? If you did (or even if you didn’t) our Back To The City exhibition will take you on a nostalgic trip through Central MK’s nightlife in times gone by. See if you can spot yourselves in the photos and remember how MK used to party in the 1980s and 1990s - the fashion, the hairstyles, the giant plastic palm trees! Join us at MK Heritage Open Days this September and get ready to go Back To The City!

Architecture students at the University of Nottingham have spent the academic year studying The New Town of Milton Keynes and proposing design projects for the city.
The theme of the year has been GreenTown ’23, referencing the ambitious - but unbuilt - 1970s plans for a third garden city in MK.
Design projects include experimental GreenTown eco-housing in Campbell Park, inspired by the Homeworld, Energy World and Future World housing expos for which the city is famous. Environmentally-themed, pop-up pavilions in support of the expo were designed for various sites across CMK from Station Square, along Midsummer Boulevard, to the Boyd and Evans ‘Underpass’ at the threshold to Campbell Park. Thesis design projects consider the creative reuse of some key CMK buildings including the Bus Station, The Point, Lloyds Court and the Santander Building. Also, new-build proposals for the rear of the library site and for perimeter parking lots. Sites outside CMK include Netherfield, MK Hospital, Two Mile Ash and Linford Lakes.
The exhibition be accompanied by a programme of free talks and events. For more information please visit the website: https://mkarchive.city (Please note this website will launch with the festival).
Curated by Pooleyville, this project has been funded by MK City Council as part of an ongoing creative programme exploring the rich and diverse archives of Milton Keynes.

Railway Cottages talk, followed by a tour of the street.
When Wolverton works was set up in the nineteenth century, LNWR needed to house their workers and were unable to obtain any more land in the immediate neighbourhood. In effect they created a small new town consisting of cottages for their workers. By the 1970s these had fallen into disrepair and only Spencer Street was retained for Heritage reasons. The street was then rented out to a group of people looking to set up a Housing co-operative. Nearly fifty years later, the street continues to flourish!

St Lawrence church is one of two remaining medieval churches in the Parish of Stantonbury and Willen. The first vicar was appointed 800 years ago this year. Come and celebrate our octocentenary with us, we’ll be having cream teas & guided tours!
St Lawrence church has been a feature of Bradwell Village for 800 years; it sits next to what remains of another ancient monument: the 12th century Motte and Bailey ‘castle’. Also nearby are the remains of Bradwell Priory with its surviving chapel. In spite of the close proximity the church has never been linked to Bradwell Priory, the advowson was instead given to Tickford Priory in Newport Pagnell. St Lawrence has had 59 vicars since ‘Henricus’ was installed in 1223 and over the years the building has undergone many changes. The Reformation and the dissolution of the monasteries made more money and materials available for further development of the building. The north porch was added using stone and timber reclaimed from Bradwell priory and the tower was enlarged to house redundant bells from Snellshall priory church. The oldest two of these; from 1310, are still being rung for Sunday services. A later alteration to the tower gave it the distinctive ‘saddle back’ roof that is an unusual feature for an English church. An extension was added at the end of the last century to make the church more suitable for the enlarged population of new Milton Keynes.
On Sunday 10th September we will be open from13:30 and will be welcoming Pilgrimage re-enactors from Bradwell Abbey.

Join us tonight as we screen Living Archive MK's film Make No Little Plans: The City Builders' Stories.
Milton Keynes today is a thriving, multi-cultural city of nearly a quarter of a million people, yet 50 years ago the site was largely occupied by farmers’ fields where crops were grown and cattle grazed. Just why and how did this agricultural area of North Bucks get transformed into the largest and most ambitious of Britain’s new towns? This film is a story of Milton Keynes’ early years, told by those who were part of the Development Corporation, tasked with its planning and development. It’s a story of audacity and brashness, of teamwork and tussles, of utopian dreams and a bold vision.

Can archives tell the stories of being young in Milton Keynes? Where does creativity fit into the conversation? If you’re aged 14-25, join us for a relaxed discussion to influence a new artwork designed to transform the possibilities of archiving.
Archives are collections of first-hand information created to preserve; tell stories; and increase our sense of identity and understanding of cultures. But what does an archive reimagined for today and for tomorrow look like? How does it capture the dynamism and diversity of being young in Milton Keynes? How is it selective yet inclusive? How can it be ‘live’? Can an archive create social change? And where does creativity fit into the conversation?
Hosted by Tara & Vic from Offset Projects, this event invites thoughts and ideas from young communities to influence the creation of a new artwork which will propose new possibilities for the archival process.
Please note that this event is for anyone aged 14-25. It’s especially perfect for those interested in art, history, sociology & communities. A sociable and friendly atmosphere is guaranteed, and snacks will be plentiful!

Westbury - A History Tour
Westbury Arts Centre, Foxcovert Road, Shenley Wood, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK5 6AA

Westbury has been home to lords, gentlemen, farmers and now artists in a story that has lasted for at least 1,000 years. This tour will lead you through the centuries from before the Saxons to the present day.
Who says Milton Keynes has no history? Westbury was already ancient when the Normans passed through in 1066 and gave the manor house here to a Norman knight – called Engaine, after which one of the amin roads in Shenley Church End is named. Once a moated manor, it was last a home occupied by its owner in the 17th century, who also installed our famous Armada Door. Tenanted from then until the 1950s by a succession of farmers through Victorian times and making its humble place as part of the hunting landscape of the Whaddon Hunt, it finally passed back into private hands.
This family enlarged Westbury in the 1960s and built a swimming pool out back - only to see it bought up by the land-grab of the New Town, and it remains today under the ownership of the council, home to a diverse and changing group of artists and open to the public most of the year for arts education and more.
This history tour will take you through that story – it’s the story of so many farms, not just locally but across the country. Westbury is Milton Keynes’ Hidden Jewel.
Come and discover our unique oasis in this vibrant city and learn more. And don’t forget to come back!

Westbury Arts Centre has a regular Art Club on both Monday and Wednesday afternoons, providing a quiet, sociable space for people to work on their own projects, be it painting, drawing, 3D, textiles, etc.
The participants treasure this time, away from distractions, in the lovely setting of Westbury, and encourage each other in their artistic journeys. This is the first time both Art Clubs have come together to exhibit their work, many of whom have not shown their work before to the public- so it is particularly suited to this year’s theme of Creativity Unwrapped.

Live music, barbecue and refreshments, crafts, plant sales and seed exchange.
Back in 2003 this site was a disused allotment site and had become a rubbish tip. Local residents had a brainwave that it could be a peaceful community area and raised funds for clearance and initial planting of a range of fruit trees and hedging. 20 years later we now have over 50 productive trees, some small growing plots, a wildlife pond, hazel coppice, a polytunnel and much more which is appreciated by the locals. Refreshments are served from our Victorian railway carriage, originally built in 1870. We have 3 community events per year and like to combine our Heritage Open Day with our Autumn Celebration. Come and enjoy the atmosphere and take away some plants and seeds, and maybe some cake and preserves.

The festival is on for a weekend in September. The route normally encompasses Green Lane, Moon Street, Victoria Street, Osborne Street, Buckingham Street, Aylesbury Street, Oxford Street, Western Road, Eton Crescent, Peel Road, Windsor Street, Cambridge Street and Church Street; however, we are hoping for more streets to get involved this year!

A fantastic open day with the opportunity to see and experience what York House has offered and continues to offer to ensure the creative arts are accessible and available to our local community.
York House is a fantastic 19th century building set in the heart of Stony Stratford. Built as a family home in 1850 it became a school in 1905. However, it was when York House was turned into a youth club in 1963 that it really began its connection with the creative arts. From band practice rooms to permanent artists and from youth drama to art classes, York House is, and has been, the home to many creative groups and individuals. Now, a thriving community centre, owned by the residents of Stony Stratford, we are proud of this heritage and are always seeking ways to reconnect further with the local creative industry. On the morning of 16th September 2023 we will be fusing the past and the present to showcase York House’s rich history as well as holding workshops and information sessions with the current artistic users of the building. There will be fun activities for all, a community café and an opportunity to give your thoughts on how York House can continue to add benefit and accessibility to our local creative community.

How William Lowndes Created Modern Winslow: History Walk
Starts at Keach’s Meeting House, Bell Walk, Winslow, Buckinghamshire, MK18 3AH

William Lowndes transformed Winslow when he built Winslow Hall (1700). The walk shows how his money affected the town & created the layout which survives today. Keach’s Meeting House - built in 1695 by Winslow Baptists - will be open to visit too.
Keach’s Meeting House is a small, hidden building which has been used for worship since 1695. Before or after the walk visitors can see its open-backed benches, box pews, gallery, pulpit, communion table, memorial tablets and gravestones. There will be a display of information about Benjamin Keach and the Winslow Baptists. In complete contrast, Winslow Hall dominates the town nearly as much as it did when it was built in 1700 for William Lowndes, a native of Winslow who made a fortune in London as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Christopher Wren may have been involved in the design, and certainly inspected the building accounts and provided some of the craftsmen.
Lowndes’ intervention helped to change Winslow from a mainly agricultural settlement in the 17th century to a more gentrified town where wealthy inhabitants invested in their houses, and pubs and shops developed to help them spend their money. He demolished buildings to create the open space now known as Home Close. He rebuilt the tithe barn and spent money on the church. His descendants enclosed the land around the town and built new farmhouses in the fields. Their interest in hunting and shooting altered the landscape and the local economy. The walk will take you around the outsides of some of the most important 17th- and 18th-century buildings, and show how they are not always what they seem to be.

Fuller’s Earth Walk
Meet outside the barn at Edgewick Farm, Woodland Way, Woburn Sands , Buckinghamshire, MK17 8QL
Within the local Woburn Sands Formation of the Lower Greensand (Early Cretaceous age, 113 million years old), which forms the Greensand Escarpment…
A geological walk around the Greensand Ridge at Woburn Sands, focusing on the record of fuller’s earth extraction as revealed by remaining landscape clues of former workings.
Within the local Woburn Sands Formation of the Lower Greensand (Early Cretaceous age, 113 million years old), which forms the Greensand Escarpment overlooking Milton Keynes to the north, are discrete layers of a pale clay known as ‘fuller’s earth’. It accumulated as weathered volcanic ash that became ponded in depressions within shallow marine sand deposits. Because of its special absorptive properties, this clay was used historically for ‘fulling’ (de-greasing) wool and hence was of considerable importance in the medieval economy of England. More recently it has been used as a bonding agent for foundry sands and for drilling-mud, cat-litter, cosmetics, etc. In the local area it has been excavated since at least the 13th C (and possibly in Roman times) – initially by digging at outcrop, but later by sub-surface mining in the 19th C and then from opencast pits in the 20th C. Historical documentary records of such extraction are good from the late 19th C, but are much more limited for the earlier, smaller-scale workings, some of which appear only as stylised ‘pitts’ shown in old maps. For the majority of older workings local minor topographical features are the only remaining evidence. The trail focuses on such remaining topographical clues, both for the older workings and the more recent back-filled opencast pits, emphasizing the idea of ‘reading the landscape’ in order to understand the historical relationship between geology and human activity.
