An historic building built in the late Victorian period specifically for, and funded by, local Freemasons. The building itself has many noteworthy features including stained glass windows and the 'Temple' or Lodge room itself. The building is well used by its members and for most of the year there are meetings taking place virtually every weekday and on some Saturdays. Consequently it is not generally available to visit.
Within the building there is a wealth of interesting pieces of furniture and artifacts, some dating back hundreds of years, each with a story to tell. You will be guided through the building by Freemasons who have an enthusiasm for their hobby and for the building; each will be keen to share their knowledge and experiences.
Virtually all of the building will be open to visit, with only private working administration offices closed to the public. The rest is available to explore. We have no secrets! Refreshments in the form of hot and cold beverages (including alcoholic options) are also available.
This year marks the 300th anniversary of regularly organised Freemasonry and there are a large number of celebratory events going on all over the country throughout 2017. At Freemasons' Hall we will have a slide show with live commentary giving a history and background to Freemasonry, commencing on the hour from 10am to 4pm.
